Obituary of Georgia W. Cheney

Georgia W. (Miller) Cheney, 88, of Peoria passed away on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, with her family at her side. She was born to George and Mary (Wolland) Miller on Sept. 11, 1926, in Peoria. She married George A. Cheney on Oct. 25, 1947. He preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 2009. Georgia is survived by two sons, Greg A. (Janice) Cheney of Rockford and Douglas S. (Jody) Cheney of Peoria; a daughter, Laura Cheney Krause (Jim Krause) of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter-in-law, Donna Cheney of DeBary, Fla.; two grandsons, Brian Matthew Cheney of Chicago and Brandon Stuart Cheney of Chicago; four granddaughters, Jessica Lynn (Troy) Nelson of Rockford, Stephanie Marie (Eric) Lindeman of Rockford, Lindsey Rae Cheney of Peoria and Ashleigh Dawn (Joe) Cheney Hart of DeBary, Fla. She is also survived by four great-grandsons, Braxton Cole Lindeman of Rockford, Jarrett Anthony Hart, Matthew Joseph Hart and Joshua James Hart, all of DeBary, Fla.; and two great-granddaughters, Madilyn June Nelson and Emily Janice Nelson, both of Rockford. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Donald G. Cheney; two sisters, Jeanne Willis and Lucille Burdett; and a brother, Walter Miller. Georgia graduated from Dunlap High School and received the D.A.R. award. After marrying George, they owned and operated the G and G Trading Post. She spent most of her life as a homemaker. She enjoyed being outdoors and doing yard work. Georgia was a school board member at Charter Oak and a member of the Peoria County Homemakers Extension Association. She volunteered at Youth for Christ in Peoria and the surrounding area and was an avid Bradley basketball fan, helped with vacation Bible school at Charter Oak and Grace Presbyterian, and hosted garage sales for Charter Oak Bible Church. She believed in Christ as her personal Savior, and she was known to be a strong woman of God. A funeral service for Georgia will be held at Cumerford-Hurd Funeral Home, located at 428 W. McClure Ave. in Peoria on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home the evening before from 4:30 to 7 p.m., and half an hour before the service. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens. Memorials in honor of Georgia may be made to Peoria Area Youth for Christ. Georgia's memorial website may be viewed at www.hurdfamilyfunerals.com.
