Obituary of George Barnes

George W. Barnes, 83, of Peoria passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017 at Proctor Hospital in Peoria. George was born on November 29, 1933 in Washburn to Clestal and Louise (Davis) Barnes. He married Phyllis L. Buttram on July 5, 1953 in Peoria. Surviving are his daughter Roxane (Dale) Fleming of Chillicothe and two grandchildren, Andrew and Jessica Fleming. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years who died on June 19, 2013, daughter Dawn Workman and a grandson, Preston Poyner. George worked as a quality assurance manager and traveled the world for Caterpillar, Inc. retiring after 35 years. After retirement, he worked with his best friend, Jack Bond, as consultants working with companies concerning quality assurance programs. He was an active member of the Mossville United Methodist Church, George Washington Lodge 222 where he was a Past Master, Scottish Rite Valley of Peoria and the Mohammed Shriners. George liked being outdoors, he was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. He also was a skilled master craftsman, making all kinds of furniture including Mission Style. He was a member of the Illinois Woodworking Club. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home in Chillicothe. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:30 am with Masonic Rites accorded. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. Memorials may be made to TAPS or to George Washington Lodge 222. Friends and family are invited to attend a luncheon at Sonny's Steak and Pasta House in Peoria following the committal service at the cemetery.
