Bonnie was one of those special people who do not come along very often. My husband Bill and I met her and her husband Adam in 1971 in California. We became very good friends and even though they moved to Illinois in the late 1970's, I still vividly remember her gentleness, generosity, and many kindnesses. She and Adam lost a newborn, and she decided to foster babies, many horribly abused, with the patience of a saint. When our first daughter was born, she adored her and wanted to go with Julie and me to many fun events. Bonnie became the godmother of our second daughter, Jennifer, in 1975.
She was a fantastic cook, baker, and gardener, and we shared many happy times at each other’s homes. One of the greatest gifts Bonnie and Adam gave us was introducing us to backpacking in the awesome Sierra Mountains. They went with us on our first trip with our toddler daughter, giving us support and tips which we use to this day. We have gone backpacking almost every year since with our daughters and in later years to other places, including Haleakala in Hawaii. Julie also continues to go, climbing mountain peaks as well, and has introduced friends to the sport.
So the love and generosity that was Bonnie will live on through the many people I am sure whose lives she has touched.
In loving gratitude, Pat, Bill,Julie, and Jennifer Thompson Bleha
