Obituary of Carroll W. Herman

Carroll Wayne Herman, 81, passed away Thursday July 19, 2018 at his home in Chillicothe. Carroll was born on January 8, 1937 in Campbell, MO. the son of Harvey and Maudie (Brannan) Herman. He marred Kathleen Shepardson on September 13, 1963 at the Methodist Church in Glasford. Also surviving are a son, Christopher Wayne Herman (Fiancée Debby Kaiser) of Peru. IL and a daughter Stefanie Michele (Wayne) Hoover of Sugar Groove, IL; three grandchildren, Gregory Wayne Hoover, Payton Kala Hoover and Carson Wayne Herman. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gregory William Herman in January 26, 1993. Carroll served in the U.S. Army from 1960-62 at Fort Sill, OK. He played for the baseball team and was able to improve as a pitcher. Carroll obtained a BS in Education and MS in Education, both from Western Illinois University. He started his teaching career at Bowen High School where he coached basketball, baseball and golf. When Bowen and Augusta Illinois consolidated (South Eastern High School) he was named head basketball and baseball coach. He then coached basketball for one year at Robert Morris College in Carthage, two years at Geneseo High School, and three years at Trenton Junior College in Trenton, MO. He was hired by Illinois Central College in 1979 as the Athletic Director and head basketball coach, retiring in 1999. His 1982 team was a national tournament qualifier and was also inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. His 1997 team took third place in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. His sons, Chris and Greg played for him at Illinois Central College and he was very proud of both of them. The high light of his day was when he talked to or saw one of his ex-players. He was an outdoor person, loving golf and fishing. He also a life long St.Louis Cardinal Fan. There will be a Celebration of Life at Arrowhead Country Club, 19430 North Centerville Road, Chillicothe on September 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Gregory Herman Baseball Scholarship Fund at Illinois Central College, One College Drive, East Peoria, IL 61635.
