The Importance of Writing a Eulogy
A eulogy is a final goodbye, it is an expression of grief and gratefulness, and a way to honor the decedent’s memory. It’s not easy to write or speak about a deceased loved one, especially when you haven’t had time to process your loss. However, a eulogy can offer comfort to friends and family, which is why it is so important. At Weber-Hurd Funeral Home, we encourage loves ones to consider saying a eulogy. Here are some tips that can help:
1. Give yourself some time
You can’t rush writing a eulogy. Take some time away from preparations and other members of your family to think about it. Look back on your interactions with the decedent, thinking about what you want to share. You need to get into the right mindset to write something heartfelt and meaningful.
2. Focus on the most personal and memorable aspects
Instead of stating facts about achievements and successes, focus on personal aspects. Share something others might not know to give the eulogy a more personal touch. Maybe they had a unique laugh, or an interesting personality quirk, or a habit of singing while cooking? Talk about their favorite quotes, songs, movies, etc. Personal stories give a eulogy depth and meaning.
3. Give a brief introduction to career and achievements
A small introduction to education, career, and achievements can be included. List something the decedent was especially proud of. For example, if they worked particularly hard to get into a college of their choice, mention it. Private stories attached to achievements will ensure the eulogy isn’t too impersonal. It’s also a good idea to speak of milestones like marriage, kids, professional successes, etc.
