Anniversaries are special occasions, a time of celebration and togetherness. People express joy over the milestones their relationship has crossed, reminding themselves not to take things for granted. Unfortunately, anniversaries can be challenging as well.

Death anniversaries are difficult, especially during the first few years. But wedding or relationship events are even more painful for most people. At Weber-Hurd Funeral Home, we recommend the steps mentioned below to help get through this difficult time:

1. Be Prepared

People often underestimate such how difficult anniversaries or birthdays can be so they don’t brace themselves for it. Unfortunately, the signs manifest a few days or weeks before the approaching date. You become more irritable, anxious, experience a surge of grief, etc. It’s a good idea to plan for it based on personal preferences. Some people don’t like to be alone on anniversaries so they make special plans with friends or family. Some want to spend time alone and away from familiar spaces.

2. Accept Different Coping Styles

Well-meaning relatives can make you feel guilty about choosing a coping style that serves you well. For example, they might encourage you to visit, compel you to talk about feelings or open up. Sometimes this gentle pressure can make things more difficult, which is why it’s important to give yourself that space to do what is best for you.

3. Try to Do Something New

It’s not easy but it is possible to turn anniversaries after death into something positive. For example, you can fulfil one item on the deceased loved one’s bucket list every year on the anniversary. Some people take solo trips or go on long drives while others volunteer for charity.

Don’t hesitate to call us at Weber-Hurd Funeral Home for advice on funeral services and other details. We’ll be happy to help.
