How to Cope With A Recent Loss During the Holidays

Dealing with grief is never easy but it can be especially taxing during the holiday season when the atmosphere is joyful and celebratory. Some people force themselves to bear it, which can be very stressful and detrimental to their long-term emotional and mental health. Here are some ways in which you can cope with a recent loss during the holiday period and ensure you go through the celebrations in a healthy manner:

1. Set boundaries

It’s important to find the right balance between being there for your family and taking some time for yourself. Set boundaries during the holiday season and decide which events and family gatherings you will attend and which you want to avoid. Don’t go to events you have no desire to attend and give yourself some breathing room between two social obligations. That should help you go through the holiday season without being too stressed.

2. Talk to friends

Spending time and commiserating with people who have suffered the same grief can be helpful and healing. But sometimes you want to get away from it all and talk with people who are not connected with the loss. This allows you to focus on yourself and heal in your own way. There are no obligations and responsibilities when you’re out with friends so you don’t have to deal with other people’s grief.

3. Take a break away from familiar surroundings

Take a trip away from your home or state and explore other regions. This will prove to be a helpful distraction and allow you to make positive memories to remember down the line. You can also explore places you intended to visit with your deceased loved one as a way to tick an item off of the bucket list.
